Akhtala fortress
Akhtala Monastery is one of the unique monuments of Christian history in the Caucasus. It is in the very north of Armenia, near the border with Georgia, 3km from the M6 highway between Yerevan and Tbilisi. It is situated on a small plateau above a small river, Shamlukh. Once there was a fortress, the walls of which are still visible at the entrance to the monastery.

Haghpat Monastery
Haghpat Monastery, also known as Haghpatavank, is a medieval Armenian monastery complex in Haghpat, Armenia, built between the 10th and 13th century. The monastery was founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh, wife of the Bagratid king Ashot III, probably in 976. The nearby monastery at Sanahin was built around the same time.

Sanahin Monastery
Sanahin Monastery is an Armenian monastery founded in the 10th century in Sanahin in the Lori Province of Armenia. According to the legend, the name of the monastery of Sanahin is a result of a quarrel that arose between the master architect and his son during the construction of the complex. It is said that a prince from Sanahin hired a renowned architect to build a monastery.

About the Day trip to Armenia from Tbilisi
Day Trip to Armenia from Tbilisi – Discover Ancient Monasteries and Northern Armenia
A Day Trip to Armenia from Tbilisi is a perfect opportunity to explore the historical and cultural treasures of Northern Armenia in just one day. Starting from Tbilisi, this journey takes visitors across the Georgian-Armenian border and leads to some of Armenia’s most important medieval landmarks — Akhtala Monastery, Haghpat Monastery, and Sanahin Monastery.
The route combines ancient architecture, breathtaking mountain landscapes, religious heritage, and fascinating stories from centuries of Armenian history. It is an ideal choice for travelers who want to experience another country while staying in Tbilisi.
Journey from Tbilisi to Northern Armenia
The tour starts in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and continues south toward the Armenian border. During the drive, travelers can enjoy beautiful views of Georgian villages, green valleys, and the changing landscapes of the Caucasus region.
After crossing the border, the scenery becomes mountainous, with deep valleys and historic settlements that reflect the rich cultural connection between Georgia and Armenia.
The northern part of Armenia, especially the Lori region, is famous for its medieval monasteries, which were once important centers of education, religion, and culture.
Akhtala Monastery – A Medieval Fortress and Spiritual Center
The first stop of the journey is Akhtala Monastery, one of the most impressive historical sites in Northern Armenia.
Built in the 10th century, Akhtala was not only a religious center but also a powerful fortress protecting the region. The monastery is surrounded by defensive walls and towers, giving it a unique appearance compared to many other Armenian churches.
The main attraction of Akhtala is its beautiful frescoes, which are considered among the finest examples of medieval Armenian religious art. The colorful paintings inside the church represent biblical scenes and demonstrate the high artistic level of the medieval period.
According to historical sources, Akhtala became especially important during the rule of the Zakarian dynasty, when Armenian culture and architecture experienced significant development.
Visitors can walk around the ancient walls, explore the monastery complex, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Haghpat Monastery – UNESCO World Heritage Site
The next destination is Haghpat Monastery, one of the greatest examples of medieval Armenian architecture.
Founded in 976 during the reign of King Ashot III and Queen Khosrovanush, Haghpat became one of the most important educational and spiritual centers in Armenia.
For centuries, monks studied theology, philosophy, science, and literature here. The monastery played a major role in preserving Armenian manuscripts and cultural traditions.
Haghpat Monastery is located on a hillside overlooking the Debed River canyon. The combination of ancient stone buildings and dramatic mountain scenery makes this place one of the most memorable destinations in Armenia.
In 1996, Haghpat, together with Sanahin Monastery, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its exceptional historical and architectural value.
Sanahin Monastery – The Center of Medieval Knowledge
The final historical stop of the tour is Sanahin Monastery, another masterpiece of Armenian medieval architecture.
The name Sanahin is often translated as “this one is older than that one,” referring to its historical rivalry with nearby Haghpat Monastery. Both monasteries were built during the same period and became important centers of learning.
Founded in the 10th century, Sanahin included churches, libraries, academies, and monastic buildings. It was a place where scholars and monks gathered to study religion, science, medicine, and philosophy.
One of the most fascinating features of Sanahin is its medieval academy, which shows the importance of education in Armenian society during the Middle Ages.
Walking through the ancient halls and stone corridors allows visitors to imagine the intellectual and spiritual life that existed here more than a thousand years ago.
Legends and Interesting Stories of Northern Armenia
The monasteries of Lori region are surrounded by many legends and historical stories. Local traditions tell stories about monks, kings, and scholars who dedicated their lives to protecting knowledge and faith.
One famous legend connects Haghpat and Sanahin with two master builders. According to the story, a disagreement between them led to the creation of two extraordinary monasteries that competed in beauty and importance for centuries.
These stories add a special atmosphere to the journey and make the visit more than just sightseeing — it becomes a journey through the history and traditions of the Caucasus.
Scenic Roads and Mountain Views
The road through Northern Armenia is itself an important part of the experience. Travelers pass through mountain landscapes, forests, small villages, and deep river valleys.
The Debed Canyon is especially impressive, with winding roads surrounded by cliffs and green hills. Every season offers a different view: colorful forests in autumn, snowy mountains in winter, fresh greenery in spring, and clear mountain landscapes in summer.
Returning to Tbilisi
After visiting Akhtala, Haghpat, and Sanahin monasteries, the tour continues back toward Georgia.
This one-day journey offers a unique chance to discover Armenia’s ancient heritage while staying in Tbilisi. The combination of history, architecture, nature, and local legends makes this tour one of the most interesting cross-border experiences in the Caucasus.
A Day Trip to Armenia from Tbilisi is a great choice for travelers who want to explore more than one country during their stay in Georgia and discover some of the most important medieval treasures of Armenia.
